Why a campsite with shaded pitches is the better choice when you’re worn out

If you’re coming from a packed working week in Vienna, look for a campsite with shaded pitches first in summer. The view and the activities can wait. I’ve held that view for more than four decades of welcoming guests here in Kaumberg.

Take a typical Friday afternoon. It’s 32°C, your pitch sits in full sun, and the car keeps getting hotter. You wait to relax, but your mind goes back over every email from the week.

Heat keeps your body on alert. As a result, you sleep badly and wake up more tired on Saturday than you were on Friday. What you need first is cool air during the day and a night that properly cools down.

In our side valley, old fruit trees and hedges give shade, and the air turns fresher by the mountain stream in the evening. Sit there for a while and your breathing slows. Then, on Saturday, you have the energy for a walk across the meadows, and the shade is somewhere to rest afterwards.

Heat on the pitch: what the sun does to sleep and rest

It’s one o’clock in the afternoon and 34°C in the shade. Your motorhome has stood in full sun since the morning, and the thermometer inside reads 45°C. The biggest source of that heat is the roof. A metal or GRP roof quickly reaches 70 to 80°C on the surface.

The roof stores this heat and releases it inwards for hours, well into the evening after the sun has gone. The windows add to it. Every unshaded pane heats the space behind it, and the windscreen is the largest uninsulated surface on the vehicle. A tent often heats up even faster, because thin fabric holds back very little heat.

For you, that means lying awake at eleven at night in a sticky sleeping bag while your appointments run through your head. So the stress of the working week follows you into the weekend. A campsite with shaded pitches deals with the problem earlier, before the heat builds up inside the vehicle.

For changes you can make to the vehicle itself, read our blog post with 14 ways to keep your motorhome cool in summer. It covers the roof, windows and habitation door step by step.

What defines a campsite with shaded pitches

A sun sail blocks direct sunlight, yet the air underneath stays warm. Then, in the evening, the ground releases the heat it has stored. That is why I think little of sites that rely on awnings alone for shade. Trees also cool the air, because their leaves give off water as it evaporates.

If you are looking for a campsite with shaded pitches, check a few things before you book:

  • Are there trees and hedges right next to or between the pitches?
  • Does the site lie in a valley where cool air flows down from the slopes in the evening?
  • Is there a stream nearby that brings the temperature down after dark?
  • Are the pitches on grass? It cools faster at night than tarmac or gravel.

Here in Kaumberg, several of these apply. Our site sits in a quiet side valley in the southern Vienna Woods, beside a mountain stream, with old fruit trees on the meadows. Even so, look at photos and satellite images of any site you consider. They quickly show how much greenery actually stands between the pitches.

Trees, hedges and grass instead of gravel and tarmac

A deciduous tree filters the light. Its leaves let a few rays through and release moisture as water evaporates, so the air beneath them cools. A fabric sail, by contrast, only blocks direct sunlight and heats up in the process.

The ground plays its part too. Tarmac and gravel soak up heat all day and give it off again in the evening. As a result, a cushion of warm air builds under your vehicle and lasts well into the night. Grass absorbs less heat, because it releases water and shades the soil.

For me, partial shade is often the more comfortable choice. Under dense, constant shade the ground stays damp and the grass thins out. After every shower, you are standing in mud. In partial shade, however, the grass dries by late morning and grows back strongly.

So our grounds mix individual trees and hedges with old fruit trees on the meadows. To me, that mix is what makes a campsite with shaded pitches: cool in the afternoon, with the sun still reaching you in the morning.

Side valley and mountain stream: why the nights are cooler

In the evening the ground cools, and the air above it grows heavier. It flows down the slopes and collects in the valleys. Because of this, a side valley is often noticeably fresher at night than the city.

Camping Paradise Garden lies in just such a quiet side valley near Kaumberg in the southern Vienna Woods, surrounded by mixed woodland. A mountain stream runs right alongside the site. Its water stays cold even in summer and cools the air along the bank. Wooded slopes also store less heat than tarmac and concrete.

You notice the difference after sunset. In Vienna, flats often hold the day’s heat well into the evening. Here you need no fan and no window open onto a noisy street, so you sleep more deeply and wake with a clear head. In short, a campsite with shaded pitches gets you through the hot afternoon, and the cool valley night lets you start the next morning rested.

Camping Paradise Garden: a campsite with shaded pitches under old fruit trees

If you’re looking for a campsite with shaded pitches here in Kaumberg, it helps to know what to expect before you arrive. We have around 50 pitches for guests, each roughly 90 to over 100 m² in size. The site is long, narrow and mostly flat.

The shade comes from individual trees and hedges, mostly the old fruit trees in the meadows. Leopold Grandl looks after around 120 old fruit varieties here and grafted and planted about 70 of them himself. However, not every pitch has a tree. Some get the afternoon sun; others sit in light, dappled shade.

So when you book, ask for a pitch under the trees. Tell us how much sun you can take, and we’ll check which of those pitches are free.

That follows from our guiding principle, ‘Living in nature, with nature’. Since 1980 we have developed the site so that the meadows and trees stay as they have grown. Planting dense rows of trees to shade every pitch would not fit with that. We prefer half a day under an old apple tree to a carefully planned avenue.

Around 120 old fruit varieties in the meadows

Anyone looking for a campsite with shaded pitches usually pictures the edge of a forest. Here, much of the shade comes from the orchard Leopold Grandl tends on the site. Of its roughly 120 old varieties, he grafted and planted about 70 himself.

Because of that, the meadows are a pleasant place to sit in summer. The trees have stood in the same spot for decades. In the afternoon their crowns shade the place where you put your chair. Over the season you also watch the blossom turn into fruit.

Our sheep farm is right next door. It has been in the family for around 200 years and is still a working farm, so the sheep graze close to the pitches. Stand at the fence and watch the flock whenever you like.

In the morning you hear the sheep first and check your phone later. Days on a farm run more slowly. You don’t have to do anything to settle into that pace.

Campsite with shaded pitches: ask before you book

The site is long and mostly flat, with individual trees and hedges. So the shade is not spread evenly across the 50 or so pitches. Some sit under old fruit trees, while others are in full sun in the afternoon. In July the difference is obvious, especially in a tent or a motorhome without an awning.

If you want a campsite with shaded pitches, tell us in advance. Add your request to your booking email to reservierung@camping-noe.at, or ring us on +43 676 4741966. Then we know what matters to you and can pick a suitable pitch.

Our confirmation sometimes lands in the spam folder. If you don’t hear back promptly, check there before chasing us. Also, ask early, because you have more choice. That way you arrive on Friday evening already knowing where your shady pitch is.

A break without much kit or a long journey

Many people working in Vienna wonder whether camping suits them if they own no equipment. I think it does. A site with good facilities makes the start much easier, because you don’t have to bring everything yourself.

Here in Kaumberg, every pitch has electricity, drinking water and waste water disposal. The toilet and shower block was rebuilt in 2005 and has modern showers and toilets. So you can leave the water containers and the pile of power banks at home.

For a first trip, a simple tent, a sleeping bag and a sleeping mat are enough. Also pack warm clothes, since evenings in the side valley are cool. In summer, a campsite with shaded pitches is worth it, because a tent in the sun heats up quickly. On our meadows, old fruit trees and hedges give shade.

The journey is short as well. Kaumberg lies around 30 to 35 kilometres south-west of Vienna, about half an hour by car. Without a car, bus 169 takes around 55 minutes from Matzleinsdorfer Platz to a stop near the site.

Getting to our campsite with shaded pitches: 30 to 35 kilometres from Vienna, by bus too

The trip to a campsite with shaded pitches doesn’t have to be long. From Vienna, you can reach us in Kaumberg in around half an hour. For your sat nav, enter Höfnergraben 2, 2572 Kaumberg.

By car, follow this route:

  1. Take the A21 Außenring Autobahn to the Mayerling exit.
  2. Head towards Hafnerberg on the B11, then continue on the B18 to Altenmarkt.
  3. Drive through Altenmarkt and turn left 1 km after Thenneberg.
  4. From there, the site is about 400 m away.

Without a car, you can get here without changing. Bus 169 leaves from Matzleinsdorfer Platz and takes about 55 minutes. The Mariazellerbus 552 also runs directly from Wien Mitte to Kaumberg. Both stop at Kaumberg/Höfnergraben, very close to the site.

However, the buses only run a few times a day, and times vary by weekday. So check current departures on vor.at, postbus.at or in ÖBB Scotty before you set off. Then you’ll know on Friday morning which bus to catch after work.

What you actually need when the site has power and water

Every pitch has electricity, drinking water and a waste water connection, so containers and power banks can stay at home. The toilet and shower block from 2005 holds five ADAC stars. For meals, the inn serves home-style cooking from its own kitchen.

For a first trip, this short list is enough:

  • tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag, ideally a warmer one for cool nights in the side valley
  • a long electric cable with a suitable adapter
  • head torch and insect repellent
  • a small tarp for the midday sun
  • cash

Some spots have shade under old fruit trees and hedges. If you’re looking specifically for a campsite with shaded pitches, ask about it when you book.

We only accept cash. A tent with 2 people costs €28.00 per night, including tourist tax, waste charge and water. Electricity is charged by meter reading at €0.50 per kWh.

The season runs from 30 March to 30 September 2026. The Wi-Fi gives you 1 GB free, enough for a quick message home. If a tent feels too basic, you’ll find information on mobile homes at mobilheim.me.

My verdict: first a campsite with shaded pitches, then peace and quiet

If you want to switch off, look for a campsite with shaded pitches before anything else. Location and facilities come next. When you need rest, distance and prestige matter least. After all, a pitch baking in the sun wears on your nerves more than any journey.

Here in Kaumberg, the shade comes from old fruit trees, free-standing trees and hedges. Every pitch has its own electricity, drinking water and waste water connection. So you won’t be lugging water containers about, and you’ll be sitting outside in the greenery sooner.

The countryside also starts right behind the site. To the north lies the Wienerwald, a biosphere reserve and Natura 2000 site. The municipality of Kaumberg has 52 km (about 32 miles) of waymarked footpaths. For example, the walk from the village centre to Araburg castle takes around an hour and a half.

The simplest way to find out whether it suits you is to talk to us. Leopold Grandl answers questions on +43 676 4741966 or by email at reservierung@camping-noe.at. The season runs from 30 March to 30 September 2026. If you’ve never camped before, a quick call beforehand clears up a lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I spot a good campsite with shaded pitches?

Look for mature trees, hedges and woodland right beside the pitches. A stream or side valley also keeps the evening air cooler. Then ask whether every pitch has electricity and water, so you don’t have to improvise in the shade.

Is there a campsite with shaded pitches near Vienna?

Yes. Camping Paradise Garden is in Kaumberg in the southern Vienna Woods, around 30 to 35 km (roughly 20 miles) from Vienna. Mixed woodland surrounds the site, and old fruit trees and hedges stand between the meadows. A mountain stream also runs past the pitches. Not all of the 50 or so pitches get the same amount of shade, so mention your preference when you book.

Why does shade on your pitch matter so much in summer?

A motorhome in full sun can reach 45°C inside when it is 34°C outside. The roof stores the heat and gives it off well into the evening. Under trees, the vehicle stays noticeably cooler and you sleep more soundly. In a tent, you will feel the difference by mid-morning.

Is camping for me if I don’t have any kit?

To start with, you need less than most people think. Every pitch here has electricity, drinking water and a waste water connection, and the modern shower block is on site. You will still need a tent or a vehicle. If you’re unsure, call Leopold Grandl on +43 676 4741966 and talk through your options.

How do I book a shaded pitch at Camping Paradise Garden?

Email reservierung@camping-noe.at or call +43 676 4741966. If your confirmation doesn’t arrive soon, check your spam folder. On site, payment is cash only; cards are not accepted.

When is the campsite open in 2026?

The 2026 season runs from 30 March to 30 September. You can book by email all year round. For the hot weeks in July and August, it pays to ask early, because shaded pitches are in high demand then.
