Campervan adventure Lower Austria: why 30 kilometres is enough

Your campervan adventure in Lower Austria starts after about half an hour’s drive. You don’t need a flight or a long planning session. A weekend is enough.

Many people think a holiday only counts if it takes you far away. With a full diary that rarely holds, because the journey uses up energy you don’t have. So you drive 30 kilometres south-west of Vienna into a quiet side valley near Kaumberg. Meadows, mixed woodland and a stream surround you, and sheep graze next door. This is where your retreat is waiting.

Everyday life starts to fall away on the drive itself. Your phone stays in your pocket more often, because there is more going on outside. The site has around 50 pitches, each between 90 and over 100 square metres. Electricity, water and Wi-Fi are available, in case you do need to sort something out. The facilities are designed for proper rest.

A break without a long journey

On Friday at five, you close your laptop. Then you get in the car and set off. After about 30 to 35 kilometres heading south-west, you turn off into the side valley at Kaumberg.

The drive is short, and that works in your favour. With every kilometre, a bit more of the office stays behind. So you arrive mentally before you even switch off the engine.

On Saturday and Sunday you are outdoors. It is a campervan adventure in Lower Austria in miniature, with woods and meadow in front of your vehicle and a stream close by. Because the drive home is short too, Sunday evening stays relaxed. On Monday you are back at your desk, and you haven’t had to use a day of annual leave.

What constant stress does to your rest

Your phone sits next to your plate. The next message arrives before you have answered the last one. Even at the weekend, your diary keeps running in your head.

So switching off is hard. If you are always reachable, you stay on duty inside, even on the sofa. Many people know the pattern: the holiday begins, and your mind needs three days to slow down.

A place that asks nothing of you helps. At our site in the Vienna Woods you see meadow, hear the stream and watch the sheep grazing next door. That makes it easier to put your phone down. We make no medical promises. The site is quiet and lies 30 kilometres from Vienna.

Your place for a campervan adventure in Lower Austria, in the Southern Vienna Woods

Your campervan adventure in Lower Austria starts in Kaumberg, at Höfnergraben 2. Camping Paradise Garden sits in a quiet side valley, surrounded by meadows and mixed woodland. A mountain stream runs along the edge of the site.

The site lies right on the Via Sacra, Austria’s oldest pilgrimage route to Mariazell. Vienna is only 30 to 35 kilometres away, so you can set off after work and soon be parked between meadow and forest. The site is also part of a working sheep farm, and the sheep graze not far from the pitches.

There are around 50 pitches, each measuring roughly 90 to over 100 square metres. Every one has electricity, drinking water and a waste water connection. So you don’t need special kit, just your van.

Location in Lower Austria: nature and farmland

The valley near Kaumberg is quiet, about 30 kilometres from Vienna. The farm around it is still in use, and the sheep graze in the meadows close to the pitches.

The farm has been in the same family for around 200 years. Its owner, Leopold Grandl, looks after about 120 old fruit varieties and has grafted and planted around 70 of them himself. That is why old trees dot the meadows.

The surrounding area forms part of Natura 2000 protected sites. Rare animals live here, such as the lesser mouse-eared bat and the marsh fritillary butterfly. To the north of the site lies the Vienna Woods Biosphere Park. In the evening, you mostly hear the wind in the leaves.

Pitch and facilities for your vehicle

The site has around 50 pitches for guests. Each plot measures roughly 90 to over 100 m². So you won’t be parked right beside your neighbour, and you can set up in peace after the drive. Electricity, drinking water and waste water disposal are available at the pitch.

The washroom block was newly built in 2005, and the ADAC has rated it 5 stars. There is also an inn on the site. Ask the owner beforehand whether it is open on the day you arrive.

Electricity costs extra, billed by meter reading at €0.50 per kWh. Water and waste water, however, are included in the price. Dogs are welcome.

Starting without kit: is a campervan trip for you?

It can be. For a first weekend you need less than you might think. Because the site is only 30 kilometres from Vienna, the journey stays short too.

Every pitch has electricity and drinking water. There are also modern showers and free Wi-Fi (1 GB fair use). The ADAC has awarded the sanitary block 5 stars.

There are limits, though. You can only pay in cash. If you have no tent or vehicle of your own, you need to sort out where you will sleep before you arrive, and we cannot promise anything on that here. So ask Leopold Grandl on +43 676 4741966.

What you really need to pack for a campervan adventure in Lower Austria

A campervan adventure in Lower Austria needs very little luggage. The site provides electricity, water, showers and toilets, so your list stays short.

  • Somewhere to sleep: bedding for your campervan or motorhome; if you are in a tent, also a sleeping mat and sleeping bag
  • Cooking: a gas stove, a pot, a pan and cutlery
  • A cable reel for the electricity connection at your pitch
  • A hose for the drinking water connection
  • Warm clothes, because the evenings in the woods get cool
  • Cash, as you can only pay in cash on site

The site bills electricity by meter reading, at €0.50 per kW. Beyond the list above you need nothing else, so leave the laptop at home.

Campervan, motorhome or tent: what suits you?

For your campervan adventure in Lower Austria you do not need specialist equipment. The site takes motorhomes, caravans, tents and motorbikes. Every pitch has electricity, drinking water and a waste water connection.

  • Campervan or motorhome: you park, plug in the electricity and your bed is already with you. This takes the least effort.
  • Caravan: setting up takes a little longer, but you get more living space.
  • Tent: you pitch and pack it down yourself, but you are closest to the meadow.
  • Motorbike: you travel with little luggage, usually together with a tent.

So the choice mostly depends on how much effort you still want after a full working week. A night costs €33 for a motorhome with 2 people and €28 for a tent with 2 people. Tourist tax, waste charge and VAT are included. Electricity is added by meter reading, at €0.50 per kW.

Switching off and feeling nature in Lower Austria

This is what your campervan adventure Lower Austria looks like at the weekend: you park up, plug in the power and water, and put your phone away. The free Wi-Fi with 1 GB is enough for a quick message to the family.

You can take these habits home with you:

  • Leave your phone in the compartment until after breakfast.
  • Walk to the Araburg castle ruins. From Kaumberg, the route takes about 1.5 hours.
  • In the evening, watch the sheep in the meadow instead of a screen.

The same habits work on a small scale in everyday life. At home, charge your phone outside the bedroom overnight and go for one walk a day without headphones.

Phone rules for a quiet weekend

A weekend without your phone sounds good, but it rarely lasts. So a few simple agreements with yourself help, ideally made before you leave home.

  • Switch off notifications before you set off.
  • Read emails only at fixed times, for example once on Saturday evening.
  • Set up an out-of-office reply so nobody is waiting for a quick answer.

The Wi-Fi at the site is free and includes 1 GB under a fair use policy. That is enough for a message or a set of directions. For a box-set marathon, however, 1 GB is far too little.

So don’t download anything beforehand that you plan to watch “just for a bit”. Then the evening stays free for the meadow and the sheep next door.

Walking and cycling straight from Kaumberg

Kaumberg has 52 kilometres of marked walking trails. Sturdy shoes are all the equipment you need.

A good place to start is the Araburg castle ruins, 800 metres above sea level and the highest castle ruins in Lower Austria. From the village centre, follow the green markings across meadows and through mixed woodland. Allow about 1.5 hours.

If you would rather cycle, take the Triestingtal-Gölsental cycle path. It is 62 kilometres long and runs through small villages and along riverbanks. Before you go, check opening times and admission prices for any stops on their websites.

Evenings at the site

When the sun sinks lower, the side valley goes quiet. The sheep wander across the meadow between the old fruit trees, and the mountain stream babbles at the edge of the site. So you set your folding chair in the grass and watch the light slowly fade. Your phone stays in the compartment, because no appointment is calling you here. This rhythm helps you settle in and recover at the same time.

You will get hungry all the same. The inn at the site serves home-style cooking from its own kitchen. Ask Leopold Grandl on +43 676 4741966 beforehand whether it is open, so you can plan your evening.
